Switzerland - South Africa Circular Construction Project

Researchers at the CEA lab collaborate with researchers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa. This initiative, under the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Project Grant – Lead Agency, aims to help incorporate circular practices and innovative methodologies in informal construction.

The project harnesses the emerging capabilities of machine learning and computer vision to detect and catalogue materials for reuse. The goal of the project is to address the challenges of material reuse in informal economies through collaboration amongst stakeholders and new technologies. The insights derived could be replicated in other regions, contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world.

Stay tuned for further updates on this SNSF project which aims to lead the way in informal circular construction.

The Chair of Circular Engineering for Architecture (CEA) develops research on matching reused architectural materials with people and projects through digitalization for a circular built environment. For more information visit our webpage.
